sketchy rendering of an adu renovation

CASITA PECAN

Austin, TX - Climate Zone 2
Under Construction

Designed around its surroundings.

Sited within the tight confines of a century-old lot in central Austin, the Tree House began its life as a detached garage. In the 100 years since its construction, the backyard of the home became the dominion of an extensive, protected pecan tree - occupying nearly all the space necessary to build a new standalone structure.

Working with respect for the existing tree, the design maintains the existing garage footprint, expanding up to a second floor office space, and out to a multi-season porch whose sides can open completely to the yard and new covered deck. Old-growth framing and board sheathing, consciously salvaged from the original structure, was adapted and re-used in the new design as stock for the porch ceiling and countertops for the bar and bath spaces.
